When I was a senior in high school, back in the dark ages, I went to school half a day and worked in a printing company the second half of the day. This was my introduction to ‘typesetting.’ The machines I started out on, were pretty amazing to me, but would now be considered quite archaic, and if any are still left hanging out, they would probably be in a museum now. I’ve been fortunate enough to learn this trade through my formative years, and ended up making my living from it.
Having grown up in the livestock industry, my main source of work is done with cattle breeders, ranchers and farmers across the country… I’ve been blessed because I get to call them FRIENDS, too. I get to take their photos (or sometimes my photos) and their ideas, and create something that has the possibility of grabbing the readers eye, since my ads appear in various livestock, beef and dairy, and other ag-related publications across the country. I’ve even had some ads go into publications like Texas Monthly and a few others. “They” say to pick a career that you ENJOY and you will never have to work a day in your life. I can sit here and honestly tell you that I ENJOY what I do. I get to start with a blank canvas and just start creating. I am a creature of habit, however, because I generally try to make my work consistent and clean. CLEAN is a good thing! Clean helps the reader follow the story. I have been blessed and able to work with some of the best photographers around, but it’s always a great thrill to have a photo come to me that actually TELLS the story without many words… telling the story with as few words as possible, is the BEST! I don’t just create ads, I also design brochures and flyers (of varying sizes and styles) along with sale cattle books, pull up banners (and other banners), amongst other advertising type items. If you can dream it, it can most likely be done!
While I am not a ‘real’ publisher, like Simon and Schuster or the like, in my ‘free’ time, I like putzing with various layouts and design work. I do know a thing or two about putting books together for myself and others but recently, wrote my own book… designed it, printed it and bound it myself. It is a two-fold book, actually. Part 1 is the synopsis of the journey I embarked on in 2017, having bariatric surgery… trials and tribulations… hoping my story might help at least one other person along the way. Part 2 is just observations of this thing we call LIFE. I do sell them for $20 each plus shipping. You can contact me on Facebook or by email: debbiemcwilliams00@gmail.com, if you are interested in obtaining a copy.
That said… do you have a story to tell? Is your story one that you want to share with family? With friends? Is yours a story to put in book form to be able to sell to others? If so, then I might just be your girl!
You write it and give me creative license (with your ideas and/or blessing) and I will make it into a “masterpiece” for you! I can do any size (up to 8.5 x 11/letter size), but I feel that smaller sizes can make your story more special or unique. Provided you don’t want a gazillion copies, I print them myself on available and appropriate paper and then bind them. I have several types of binding machines, the infamous “plastic comb” binder, a plastic comb (spiral) binder, and then the wire binding spine machines that punch either round holes or square holes. Going back to the amount of copies… I can still design your book and then get a quote for getting them professionally printed… that IS what I do, being a graphic artist and all.
Books are not all I do though… calendars, daily/weekly planner books, poem books, you name it, if it can be done, I’m sure I can do it!
